James Blood Ulmer (aka Damu Mustafa Abdul Musawwir) (born Willie James Ulmer in St. Matthews, South Carolina, on 2 February 1942; died 3 June 2026) was an American avant-garde , free-funk, and and remembered for his distinctive guitar sound described as "jagged" and "stinging" - with his singing called "raggedly soulful." Ulmer began his career playing with various ensembles, and first recorded with organist John Patton in 1969.
